What is Zion?

 What is Zion?

What is Zion?  Is it an amorphous concept that we talk about never really defining it? Is it a people? Those that have somehow put off the natural man for a more pure nature. Is it a place? A real, solid, tangible place. What, exactly, is Zion?

In Doctrine and Covenants section 97 is says Zion is the pure in heart.

21 Therefore, verily, thus saith the Lord, let Zion rejoice, for this is Zion —THE PURE IN HEART; therefore, let Zion rejoice, while all the wicked shall mourn.

What then, does it mean to be pure in heart?

As I have pondered on this, the conclusion I have come to is the pure in heart are those people, imperfect though they may be, that have no desire to harm others. There is no conscious intentional thought to do things that harm others. They do not desire to take advantage of their neighbor. There is in them no desire for power or gain. They eschew violence against their fellow men. They simply want peace.

Apparently this is a thought that I have been considering for quite a long time. I recently found this from a conversation, from many years ago, I don't remember having or with whom.

"I find it interesting when we think of Zion or a Zion people we think of a perfect society. What if Zion is not necessarily a perfect society but a "perfect attitude" for living in that society. We would still have people that irritated and annoy us but we would also treat them with love, compassion, respect and mercy. In essence allowing each to live according to their understanding. That would probably have a greater effect for changing people for good than anything else. Right now everything is force and compulsion in one form or another. It truly is all about what is in the heart. For what is in the heart shows even if we don't want it to, all by our actions."

How do we purify our hearts? How do we develop this "perfect attitude"? I find the vast majority of us are stuck in a very worldly mindset. Even those that have gained further light and knowledge with a greater understanding of the things of God still suffer from it. It would require a change of heart and mind from what we currently may possess. Is this something we do alone? Or do we, like stones in the river, help with this process in order to smooth the rough edges?

In contemplating Zion, I have come to the conclusion that it will more likely happen if allowed to coalesce organically (much like the Church of Christ) rather than with an intentional gathering. An intentional gathering will have difficulty succeeding as long as the worldly mindset comes with those who participate in it. Though it could become for some a refining experience. As people reach a certain point of understanding I believe they will naturally come together. It is when those who have developed pure hearts come together that Zion will begin to form.

I have also concluded that the cause of Zion is Peace. So to establish the cause of Zion is to establish peace.  To bring forth Zion is to bring forth Peace.

Regardless, only the pure in heart can truly establish and bring forth peace because they will have no darkness in their hearts. Their intentions for themselves and their fellow men must be pure and not tainted with the desire for, among other things, control and gain over their fellow men and dragging them down. They will eschew selfishness and desire the best for their fellow men and work toward lifting them up.

Zion may be found in one individual heart, but when many of those hearts come together then the power of God can manifest to a greater degree. A Zion society will be transformative. I imagine it will be nothing like what we currently have here on the earth. If we recreate what we have in the world today then we truly will have failed to bring forth Zion. A concept that does not now seem so hard to define. It is bringing the ways of heaven to this earth. It is a people unlike any on earth. It is a place where all these may dwell.  It is a concept, a people, a place that is quite the opposite of what we have in the world today. That is Zion.

A New Beginning

I can't believe it has been so long since I posted on this blog. Actually, it has been a while since I posted on any of my blogs. Now, however, I am feeling a renewed energy to do so.

This is a new beginning for this blog. I am going to endeavor to post my thoughts about Zion and my understanding of what it is. It will be a place where, hopefully, I can explore and distill my thoughts and ideas down to a more solid understanding.

I am going to leave all of the older posts for the value they have and maybe they will show how my perspective has grown and evolved.

If you have come here and find it to be something of interest to you, I hope, you will engage in a discussion and share your thoughts. That is what the comments are for.

Zion is one of those subjects that is dear to my heart and I fervently hope I have the opportunity to actually be there someday.

Something to Ponder

If we weren't working for power or gain, what would our motive be? In other words, what motivates us to do what we do? Why do we work 9 to 5 jobs and what are we working for?

Resources on Zion

In Doctrine and Covenants section 98 verse 12 it states: For he will give unto the faithful line upon line, precept on precept;... In that spirit I thought it would be good to share some web sites with information on Zion. They each have something to contribute to an understanding of the subject. As in all things be sure to discern the truth through the Spirit.

I find this one to be a great starting point in any studies on Zion.

This one has more in depth studies using the Doctrine and Covenants and words of modern day prophets.

This one is a link to some of the scholarly works of Hugh Nibley. I find his works very refreshing but as with all things learn by the Spirit.

Anyone know of any other sources on the web or off that would be good to add to this list?

Mind-set

I think one of the most important things to do when studying gospel principles is to step out of our current mind-set so we can have a greater ability to comprehend them. In studying the concept and principles of Zion I think it is just as, if not more, important to do so. The reason being that Zion can only be established on the principles of the Law of The Celestial Kingdom (Doctrine and Covenants 105:5). Whereas we live in a telestial world and spend most of our time thinking on that level. In Isaiah 55: 8-9, God says, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
If our thoughts are not His thoughts and our ways not His ways then it is imperative that we work on understanding these principles from the higher point of view. I am sure it will take much effort, study and prayer but we can begin to comprehend the principles and laws we must obey to live in Zion and enter the Celestial Kingdom.

That said, one of the first things I would like to do is ask, what are some of the aspects you would expect to find in a Zion/Celestial society? How many of the things in our current society will we find there? How many will completely disappear from our lives? What things might be there that we have currently never considered? (This one should be fun to try and answer) All of these questions are designed to expand the mind and alter the perception. For certainly in Zion things will not currently be as they are.

Pure In Heart - Poem

I had been wanting to write a poem to launch this blog. Naturally nothing would come to me when I wanted it to. Fortunately I have been writing a poem a day for National Poetry Month. The other day I got the poem I wanted to start this blog. Here it is. I hope you enjoy it.

Pure In Heart

There is a place
Where the pure in heart dwell
It is more like heaven
Than this earthly hell
Yet on this earth
Is where it must be
To give us the key
To eternity

Who are the pure in heart
That dwell
In this peaceful land
They are those that think of God
More than the things of man
Worldly things
Are to them as dross
The life they look for
Beyond a cross

Intelligence is to them
Their greatest earthly treasure
Nothing else in this sphere
Has an equal measure
They are unified
In mind and heart
A people
One in the Gospel art

Among them they hold
All things in common
Yet seek not
The power of mammon
Wanting no more
Than what they need
Truly, loving they neighbor
Is their creed

One can ten thousand
Put to flight
Filled with wisdom
Love and light
From mountain peak
To distant shore
Learning the art
Of war no more
With God's great power
On their side
The blessings of Heaven
On them abide

ZionQuest Group

I have started a google group to go along with this blog. If there is a way to link the two I will. Until then here is the web address:  http://groups.google.com/group/zionquest. I am planning on starting a discussion thread there for each post on the blog. This is most definitely a work in progress. So please be patient until I get everything together.
